Functional Medicine FAQ

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine addresses the person as a whole. When reviewing patient’s history, we look at genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that can influence their health. We do not isolate symptoms but rather look for underlying causes. We focus on improving physiological function as a primary method of improving the health of patients. We believe that this approach supports health and vitality in all of our patients and can help improve the quality of their lives. For example, if someone comes in complaining of fatigue we perform a thorough work up. We determine what the cause of their fatigue is. Is the fatigue due to the adrenals, thyroid, stress, gut, anemia, etc. or all of the above? We then develop a protocol to best address the problem and help support you in healing yourself.

What is functional blood chemistry?

A blood chemistry panel is the most efficient and effective screening tool for your doctor to assess your health. We order a comprehensive blood panel to help us provide insight into your working physiology. There are specific patterns that can be identified for a number of heath conditions. The blood chemistry analysis offered at Optimal Wellness Chiropractic differs from most standard blood tests in two ways. First, we measure over fifty markers. Second, we use a functional range in addition to the laboratory pathological range. The pathological range detects disease. The functional range assesses the risk for disease before disease develops. In common medical terms, your lab work is “flagged” when you slide out of the pathological range. The pathological range compares your health to people with a disease, whereas the functional range compares you to healthy individuals. If markers can be managed before they fall outside the pathological range, preventative medicine can be practiced. If there is disease indicated, we will refer you to the appropriate health professional. Generally, we find imbalances that we can address with supplements and lifestyle modifications like diet and activity. These conservative, non-invasive approaches allow us to act on early warning signals from your body, keeping you in great health and preventing deterioration to disease.

Who can benefit from functional medicine?

People who are experiencing fatigue, pain, headaches, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, Hashimoto’s, eczema, psoriasis, sleep problems, digestive issues, hypoglycemia, hot flashes, PMS, high cholesterol, memory loss, mental fog, arthritis, weight gain, acid reflex, indigestion, frequent colds, or … If you do not see your condition or symptom(s) above, ask us via phone or email.

Health is not just the absence of disease. Some people may not have obvious symptoms and seek preventative care to determine what level of health they are in and to see if there is anything else they can do to increase the quality of their life.

What should I expect on my functional medicine visit?

Prior to the initial appointment, completion of paperwork and any previous bloodwork or other health records are required so Dr. Huynh is able to review them before meeting with you. Your first visit will be 1-1.5 hours and will consist of questions pertaining to your condition, a thorough medical history, a physical exam, and a discussion of possible causes of your symptoms and health conditions. Some recommendations to get you started may be given on this first visit. Further testing such as blood tests and/or specialized diagnostic tests are often requested to better assess your health. A second appointment (30-45 minutes) is scheduled one to three weeks later to review test results with you and make recommendations on diet, lifestyle modifications, and supplements. Follow-up visits are usually in 3 to 8 weeks depending on your particular condition, severity, pace of progress, and types of treatments recommended.

Do you offer natural hormonal balancing?

Yes, this is addressed in Functional Medicine. Tests are used to identify hormonal imbalances in men and women. A plan will be devised to correct imbalances naturally and effectively. Women with PMS, fatigue, hot flashes, and/or other female issues can be helped as well as men with andropause or decreased energy, sweating attack, muscle weakness.
